Work areaHowever, the primary success of C. D'Amours Contracting Ltd. has been in their work as logging contractors, managing stump-to-dump operations in Northern Ontario.Although now a large regional operation boasting sales in the millions, C. D’Amours Contracting Ltd. began with two men and a skidder. Gaston D’Amours, a 15-year veteran of woodlands operations, saw big changes in the bush. He and his son Claude realized modernization was driving huge vehicles into the wilderness - equipment that could do the work of 25 men with chainsaws.

They started simply, renting one “C5 Treefarmer” cable skidder. While their operation was small, the father-son team knew that with hard work, success was within reach. Traveling hundreds of kilometers a day, hauling fuel in the trunk of their car, and working every day of the year except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, the D’Amours dug in.

The work was hard, but they had a formula: always finish on time; always work harder than the competition; repeat customers make more repeat customers; and always be open to change and opportunities.

Claude then saw a market for general contracting. Their first timber license saw C. D’Amours Contracting Ltd with a 20,000 cubic metre per year limit.

He bought his father’s share in 1989 and incorporated the company. During the following years, the company went from cutting 20,000 cubic metres to cutting approximately 700,000 cubic metres.
